Right now, our society is in the throes of protein-mania. While once limited to gym bros, now it seems everyone and every food company is on the protein bandwagon. Make no mistake, protein really is good for you but perhaps it’s not fully understood by most.
We hear that protein is essential for building muscles, but what if there was one protein in your body right now holding you back from getting shredded? Without this protein’s presence in your body, you wouldn’t need endless gym sessions, heavy lifting, and waking up sore every morning. That sounds like every gym bro’s dream.
The protein is called myostatin, and it works together with another called activin A. They act like built in brakes on your muscle growth. They regulate how big and how many muscle cells you can make, basically putting a natural limit on how jacked you can get without putting in the work.
Now, imagine if those brakes were gone. People born with a rare genetic mutation that prevents them from producing myostatin end up with dramatically more muscle mass, significantly more strength, and often lower body fat. There was a well known case years ago of a young German boy who, as a toddler, could already lift weights most grown men would struggle with. On paper, it looks like the ultimate upgrade. Super strength without the grind.
But here is the surprise. That dream mutation is not the gift it seems. It actually proves something many intelligent design proponents have been saying for years. Most mutations are not helpful improvements. They usually come with trade offs that show up somewhere else, and they point to the fact that God designed the human body with incredible balance and purpose from the start.
Look at what happens when this mutation appears strongly in animals, such as the double muscled Belgian Blue cattle. These animals pack on 20 to 40 percent more muscle than normal, but it creates serious problems. The calves are so large that natural births become extremely difficult, leading to higher rates of C sections, complications, and even deaths. The extra muscle mass puts extra strain on the heart and lungs, which do not always scale up proportionally. These animals tire out faster, handle stress and heat worse, need more feed to maintain their size, and are more vulnerable when resources get tight.
Even in the rare human cases, doctors have raised concerns about long term effects. Because myostatin also plays a role in heart tissue, there is worry about potential overgrowth or strain on the cardiac muscle. The sudden increase in muscle size can also overload tendons, joints, and connective tissue that were not built to handle that kind of rapid, unbalanced growth. Lab studies on animals with myostatin knocked out often show that while the muscles get bigger, they can shift toward fast twitch fibers that fatigue more quickly, losing some of the balanced endurance the body normally has.
Activin A adds another layer. It is not just a muscle regulator. It is involved in controlling inflammation, wound healing, bone metabolism, and parts of the immune system. Disrupting both proteins at once risks throwing off multiple systems that need to stay in harmony.
This is where the bigger picture comes in. If life were simply the result of blind evolutionary chance stacking up lucky accidents, a mutation that delivers extra strength and muscle should spread rapidly because it would give a clear survival advantage. But it does not. It remains extremely rare. Why. Because in the real world, that extra bulk demands more calories, more oxygen, and more structural support. When life gets hard. Drought, cold, heavy labor, or normal aging. The finely tuned, balanced design wins out.
These kinds of mutations do not upgrade the system from scratch. They usually unbalance or degrade what was already set up just right. That is strong evidence we are not the product of random processes. We are fearfully and wonderfully made by a wise Creator who put those limits in place for a reason.
God did not give us myostatin to frustrate us or keep us weak. He gave it to keep our bodies in balance, to teach us the value of honest work and discipline, and to remind us that we are dependent on Him. Not on trying to rewrite our own biology like we know better than the Designer.
The next time you are in the gym pushing through another set and feeling like your body is holding you back, maybe offer a quiet thank you. Those natural limits are part of how He designed us to grow not just stronger muscles, but stronger character, patience, and faith. True strength is not found in bypassing God’s design. It is found in working hard within it and trusting the One who formed us.
