Governor Gavin Newsom and our state’s Democrat supermajority Legislature just took California another step down the road of racial division, moral blackmail, and political theater. On October 10, Newsom signed SB 518, a bill that creates the “Bureau for Descendants of American Slavery.”
This bill is a statement by Sacramento liberals that they support the divisive far left idea of slavery reparations, or the notion that African Americans should receive taxpayer money to compensate them for slavery they never experienced and paid for by taxpayers who never owned slaves, and most of whom don’t even have ancestors who owned slaves. In fact, millions have ancestors who fought to free slaves.
However, in true Sacramento Democrat fashion, the bill doesn’t actually benefit descendants of slaves anyway. It benefits, guess who? Bureaucrats. It creates up to 85 new jobs to work in this new woke bureau at a cost to taxpayers of $20 million annually.
Hell, I’d almost rather they just used it for reparations checks because at least it would be going to a regular person and not a bureaucrat.
This Isn’t Reparations — It’s Racial Bureaucracy
Upon passage of this legislation, the state is now going to be creating an entire new government agency whose first job is to dig through people’s bloodlines and decide who qualifies as a “descendant” of slaves. You want in? Better hope your genetic paperwork looks good enough for Sacramento.
They claim this is justice. Let’s be real about what it really is: racial gatekeeping wrapped in red tape.
There’s no actual compensation to descendants of slaves in this bill. Just a promise that maybe someday the government might figure it out — once they hire enough staff, build enough infrastructure, and spend enough millions. The only thing that’s guaranteed right now is a mountain of tax dollars flowing into yet another alphabet-soup department.
$20 Million a Year to Decide If You’re Oppressed Enough
According to state budget analysts, the cost to operate this new bureau will start around $11.3 million and climb to $20 million annually, with no end in sight. And that’s before they even get around to proposing who’s eligible for what benefits — if any. It’s a blank check to a bureaucracy built on division by ancestry — not merit, not need, not citizenship. Just lineage.
It doesn’t stop there either. The state is also letting the bureau collect and hold your genetic information, with privacy waivers baked in. You think that’ll never get abused? Think again.
Reparations for Some — Silence for Others
Let’s be honest: this isn’t really about justice for people whose ancestors were oppressed. If it were, they’d be talking about the white sharecroppers who starved in Reconstruction or the Mormon families who were hunted down under extermination orders.
This isn’t about pain — it’s about politics. Your story only matters if it fits their narrative. This is Newsom and Sacramento Democrats taking $20 million of your tax dollars every year, and lighting it on fire, as a statement that they’re woke.
The Dangerous Game They’re Playing
SB 518 sets a new precedent — one that says you can inherit victimhood like a trust fund. That guilt and innocence are passed down like eye color. That government should pick winners and losers based on who your great-great-grandfather was. That how much social currency you have is based on how oppressed you are, or how oppressed your ancestors were.
This is institutionalized resentment, and it’s the exact opposite of what we need.
We’re Deserve Better Than This
Most Californians — of every color — are out here working hard, raising kids, paying rent, and trying to live free. We don’t need another government agency judging our ancestors. We don’t need racial certification to prove our worth. And we sure as hell don’t need to be funding a new layer of bureaucracy whose only product is more grievance and more division.
This isn’t healing. This is a hustle. This is woke grandstanding that turns neighbors against each other and forces all of us to pay for it with our tax dollars.
