Millennials Say Doctors Offices Should Learn to Text

By Emma Spencer, Science & Technology Reporter

For many millennials, Doctor Google, Doctor Facebook, and Doctor ChatGPT are the go to place for medical advice. For actual physicians, this state of affairs is alarming. Why do so many Americans of all ages spurn traditional care and turn to their electronic devices instead? Today, it seems like traditional medical providers with years of training are struggling to compete even with multi level marketing companies selling essential oils as the cure for what ails you. How did we get here?

Millennials especially say booking appointments is inconvenient with long holds and long waits for appointments. Office hours are a challenge too with many practices still only operating on a 9-5, Monday to Friday schedule. Add to that surprise bills and it’s no wonder a generation is turning to the internet instead.

Recent data backs the frustration. Surveys show millennials prioritize convenience and transparency above almost everything else in healthcare. One analysis found they frequently opt for urgent care clinics, retail health spots, and telehealth options precisely because traditional primary care demands too much upfront hassle.

A big pain point? Scheduling. Millennials report strong dislike for phone-based appointment systems and rigid hours that don’t fit modern life. Instead, many want text-based communication with providers, same-day or evening options, and clear upfront costs. Accenture research and others highlight how this cohort is driving demand for digital-first care such as electronic prescriptions, online portals, and virtual visits. Roughly 74% of millennials prefer telehealth over in-person for many needs.

“Convenience and instantaneous, on-demand access is a must-have,” notes one healthcare insights report on millennial patients.

The cost side bites hard too. With upfront pricing rare in many practices, patients face uncertainty that clashes with a generation used to seeing prices before buying almost anything else. Studies repeatedly show millennials spurning family doctors for models offering predictable fees and shorter waits.

Deeper issues simmer beneath the surface. Providers often lament that patients spurning preventative care and going to friends and the internet for medical advice over their doctor. However, changing this state of affairs requires a proactive approach by providers.

Convoluted processes, poor communication, and systems designed for a past era are all factors that make doctors’ services unappealing to many younger Americans. Research on physician-patient dynamics points to mutual frustrations from everyone involved. Doctors complain of high volumes and administrative overload while many patients report feeling dismissed or unheard. Poor communication remains a top driver of dissatisfaction and even medical errors.

In California, regulatory burdens and staffing shortages only serve to exacerbate these problems. Locals juggling warehouse shifts, office jobs, or side hustles in places like Roseville or North Highlands can’t afford to burn a full day for a 15-minute visit that took three weeks to book.

Some practices are adapting by offering text messaging for routine questions, extended hours, price transparency tools, and social media platforms for education and booking. Direct primary care models and telehealth platforms show promise. But the broader system as a whole has been slow to change, leaving millennials to patch together care from whatever’s fastest and cheapest.

The result? Delayed preventive care, over-reliance on emergency options, and growing distrust. If healthcare wants to serve the next generation of patients and taxpayers, it needs to meet them where they are: on their phones, on their schedule, and with up front pricing.
