How to Look Stylish at the Airport — Without Feeling Like Hell

By Lena Vasquez | Community Features & Culture Editor

The Department of Transportation recently encouraged Americans to elevate their airport attire. And while some folks immediately took offense — because these days everything offends somebody — maybe this one’s worth sitting with for a minute.

Have you noticed what people wear in public now? Pajamas in Walmart… slippers in the Dollar Store… blankets wrapped around bodies in the terminal like it’s a FEMA zone. The airport used to be a place you actually dressed for. Now it looks like a nationwide sleepover.

Forget the politics. Forget who you voted for. Forget if you love or hate the administration.
Just be honest:

When you’re at an airport, you might run into someone who matters.
Someone you wanna work with. Someone you wanna date. Someone who sees your name on an email later and remembers if you looked put-together or like a collapsed circus tent.

Looking decent shouldn’t be controversial.
And it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable.

Here are simple, stylish, zero-stress ways to level up your airport look without suffering through a six-hour flight like a sardine:

1. Choose “elevated comfortable” instead of sloppy

Think joggers, not pajamas. A clean hoodie, not that coffee-stained sweatshirt you sleep in. Stretch fabrics that move with you but still look like you’re a functioning adult.

2. Wear shoes you can walk in — but still look human

Nice sneakers. Chelsea boots. Anything supportive.
Just leave the Hello Kitty slippers at home, for the love of God.

3. Layers make you look put together

A light jacket or overshirt instantly takes you from “I just rolled out of bed” to “I know how to present myself,” without adding any effort.

4. Keep colors simple

Black, charcoal, olive, denim — clean neutrals photograph well, travel well, and signal that your life is somewhat in order.

5. Use accessories to fake polish

A clean hat, a nice bag, simple jewelry — the kind of stuff that makes people assume you planned things even if you didn’t.

6. Bring the right bag

A structured backpack or tote looks professional, doesn’t dig into your shoulder, and keeps all your chargers, snacks, and chaos under control.

7. Grooming matters more than you think

You don’t need makeup or gel or anything dramatic. Just wash your face, brush your hair, and look like a person who didn’t survive a tornado last night.

A little effort goes a long way in a place where nobody tries anymore.
You don’t need designer clothes. You don’t need to “dress up.” You just need to look like you respect yourself enough to not board a plane in pajamas.

And honestly?
That shouldn’t be a political controversy.
It’s just common sense — and good manners.
