A major highway project in Sacramento is set to take longer and cost more than initially estimated, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
The Fix50 project, aimed at replacing pavement and improving carpool lanes on Highway 50—a key thoroughfare for local motorists—was originally scheduled for completion by July 2025. However, Caltrans now anticipates that upgrades will not be finished until summer 2026 due to delays caused by adverse weather conditions and accidents.
The total cost of the project has also increased, now expected to reach $529 million, a significant rise from the initial estimate of $483 million. Caltrans officials noted that some of the pavement conditions were worse than anticipated, leading crews to excavate more deeply than planned.
Despite the delays, Caltrans stated that most of the work is expected to be completed by December.
