Demolition Derby at the Arden Mall?

By Dean Maddox, Public Safety & Crime Reporter

Some Sacramento residents went to the mall today and while they might have planned on picking up a tank top or a bathing suit for these hot summer days, instead, they got a front-row seat to a wild scene that looked more like a demolition derby.

According to a video posted by 916 Now on social media, an intoxicated driver hit multiple cars and a bus before ramming their vehicle into a tree. The suspect tried to escape but ran right into police, who promptly apprehanded the individual.

While law enforcement organizations and community groups have invested heavily in educating the public on the dangers of intoxicated driving, Californians may want to brace themselves for more incidents like occurred today as authorities release more jail inmates early and focus on treatment programs and mental health interventions for offenders with substance abuse issues.

The Arden Mall remains open for business and the suspect will now begin their recovery journey, or as is too often the case in California, simply continue to conduct business as usual.
