SACRAMENTO – In a last-minute legislative blitz, California Democrats are barreling ahead with a slate of extreme bills that critics say would erode parental rights, entrench abortion and assisted suicide into law, push transgender ideology on kids, and even force schoolchildren to celebrate non-Christian religious holidays against their faith. With the state Legislature wrapping up its floor sessions this week, these measures—backed by progressive activists—are poised to land on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk, where he could sign them into law or let them slip through without a veto.
The push comes amid warnings from faith-based groups like the California Family Council (CFC), which has been tracking the bills and urging Christians to “stand firm” as “watchmen on the wall,” invoking Ezekiel 33:7 from the Bible. “Unless Christians speak out now, these proposals could soon reshape California in ways that directly oppose God’s design for life, family, and liberty,” the CFC declared in a recent report obtained by US Media.
At the heart of the controversy are a dozen bills that conservatives argue represent a full-frontal assault on traditional values. One measure, AB 84, which threatened to crack down on charter schools and homeschooling options cherished by many parents, has been shelved until next year after fierce backlash. But the rest are steaming toward final votes, with potential to “undermine the inherent dignity of vulnerable individuals” and promote “harmful cultural agendas,” according to the CFC.
Assault on Parental Rights: Strangers Could Hijack Kids’ Decisions
Leading the pack is AB 495, which expands the Caregiver’s Authorization Affidavit—a form allowing non-parents to make key decisions on a child’s education and healthcare. Despite recent amendments removing provisions for “mentoring relationships” and explicit no-parent-signature rules, critics slam it as “window dressing.” The bill still doesn’t require parental notification or consent, and lacks fraud safeguards, meaning a stranger could falsely claim kinship without verification or notarization.
“This is a direct violation of parental rights guaranteed by the Constitution,” the CFC warned, noting the bill awaits Senate and Assembly votes. Parents and advocates are mobilizing through CFC’s legislator contact campaigns to kill it.
Another flashpoint is AB 1084, which fast-tracks name and sex changes on birth certificates for minors, slashing approval times to six weeks and axing public objection periods. Shockingly, courts are barred from denying changes based on a child’s biological sex, even if parents object on those grounds. “This effectively silences parents who are seeking to protect their children from irreversible confusion and harm,” the CFC said, labeling it a promotion of “false ideology” contradicting “biological reality and biblical truth.”
Pushing LGBTQ Ideology and Suicide Hotlines on Students
AB 727 mandates that schools and universities print the Trevor Project’s suicide hotline—an LGBTQ advocacy group—on student ID cards for grades 7-12 and beyond. The CFC blasts the organization for its $100 million budget and for steering vulnerable teens toward “embracing LGBTQ identities” via online chat rooms that connect kids with unverified adults, potentially alienating them from families.
“This isn’t about preventing suicide; it’s about indoctrinating kids,” a CFC spokesperson told US Media, highlighting the bill’s pending Senate and Assembly votes.
Enshrining Death: Assisted Suicide and Abortion Expansions
On the life issues front, SB 403 would make California’s physician-assisted suicide law permanent by scrapping its 2031 sunset date. Enacted in 2015, the End of Life Option Act lets terminally ill adults get lethal drugs, but critics say it “violates the biblical standard that every human life is sacred” and devalues the elderly and disabled.
Abortion bills are also surging: AB 260 expands access to drugs like Mifepristone by shielding providers from liability, stripping prescriber info from labels, and forcing insurance coverage despite federal shifts. AB 54 similarly protects mailing and distributing these drugs retroactively to 2020, insulating California from pro-life states post-Dobbs.
“These bills dangerously prioritize the abortion industry’s agenda over women’s safety, ignoring risks like hemorrhaging and death,” the CFC argued. Both await Senate and Assembly action.
Meanwhile, AB 45 bans geofencing around abortion clinics, blocking pro-life groups from targeted ads offering alternatives. “This is a direct assault on free speech, silencing pro-life voices when women need them most,” the CFC charged.
Transgender Mandates: Forcing Coverage and Hiding Records
Transgender-focused bills are drawing fire too. SB 418 requires insurance to cover “experimental” gender transition procedures for minors and adults, despite “mounting evidence” of harms like infertility and regret. SB 59 seals court records for sex changes and criminalizes disclosing someone’s “true identity,” which the CFC calls an “assault on truth, liberty, and public safety.”
SB 497 shields prescription data for transgender drugs from out-of-state probes, repurposing a drug monitoring system to protect “irreversible procedures” for kids.
Religious Freedom Under Fire: Mandating Diwali Celebrations
In a move that has faith leaders up in arms, AB 26 would declare Diwali—a Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist holiday—a state holiday, allowing time off and requiring schools to hold exercises “celebrating” it. But the CFC warns this “mandates active participation in religious observances,” involving prayers to deities like Lakshmi and Hanuman, violating First Amendment protections.
“This risks compelling students and teachers to engage in practices that contradict their own religious convictions,” the group said.
As these bills hang in the balance, conservatives are sounding the alarm. “This is a critical moment for the Body of Christ,” the CFC urged, calling for prayer, sharing, and action. With Newsom’s track record on progressive issues, vetoes aren’t guaranteed—leaving families, churches, and pro-life advocates bracing for a potential overhaul of California’s moral landscape.
